Brower Student Center Landscape

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This project completes the landscaping at the Brower Student Center Renovation, incorporating the donated lion sculpture into the landscaping between the BSC and the Art & IMM Building.

DESIGN TEAM:

  • LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT: Bryan Hanes Studio
  • TCNJ DESIGN MANAGER: Mark Kirchner
  • TCNJ CONSTRUCTION MANAGER: Matt Bonomo

CURRENT STATUS:  This project was completed in 2018 by M&M Construction

LANDSCAPE NARRATIVE:

The new landscape between the Brower Student Center and the Art and Interactive Multimedia Building replaces a vehicle drop-off area and worn seating area.

Paved walkways pinwheel through a bluestone court, with the William M. McLagan ’87 Lion given pride of place in the center. The warm hues of the bronze lion are picked up in the custom wood-topped benches that ring the edges. The courtyard is nestled into a canopy of 27 hawthorn trees, which bloom in spring, enveloping the court on three sides in a cloud of delicate white flowers. A carpet of sedges grows under the hawthorns.

From the reconfigured drive, an open lawn dotted with three large American elms rises to meet the courtyard, leading the eye towards the lion, with the grove of hawthorns as a backdrop. The canopy trees and lawn offer both sunny and shady spots for lounging, reading, or bringing a lunch outside. A weathering-steel retaining wall holds back the raised lawn edge. Banks of evergreen shrubs frame the entrance to the Brower Student Center, interspersed with low-growing sumac, which provides spectacular fall color.

Trees Removed: 9 (some sickly, none over 20ft tall)
Trees Relocated: 7 (to housing)
Trees Added: 58
